FORTRESS
OF GAVI

Arrival in Gavi. The fortress of Gavi
is a fortress built by the Republic of Genoa on the exhisting
castle belonged to the Marquises of Gavi. It has been submitted
to various modifications during the centuries. The fortress of
Gavi is a historical defensive fortress built on an exhisting
medieval castle dating back to 12th century. The present bulding
is a star shaped polygon. Inside the polygon you can see two areas
: the " Maschio " (donjion) or high fortress including the original
buildings and the " cittadella " or low fortress composed by later
buildings. |

CANTINA PRODUTTORI DEL GAVI

whose mottos are:
HARDWORK: to boost not very known grapes often bought by important
producers and bottlers and used as components of Vermouth and
sparkling wines. ENGAGEMENT : to create a unite and equal group

ROCCA GRIMALDA
|
Arrival in Rocca Grimalda. It has a
wide territory but a small historical center, very well preserved.
The first documents date back to High Middle Ages: in 963. The
village, typically medieval, is situated on the top of a rocky
high ground dominating the left bank of the stream Orba. From
the top of the village is possible to dominate all the ways of
communication , today as in the past, between the " Oltregiogo
Pavese " and the Alessandria plain and, as far as you can see,
the last offshoots of the Pennines and the hills of Monferrato. |

MUSEUM OF THE MASK
|
Its creation is mainly due to the presence
in Rocca Grimalda of a very ancient carnival tradition the " Lachera".
To preserve and bring out this ancient but up to now alive and
vital tradition, the collections hosted in the museum offer to
the visitors the opportunity to notice a rich heritage of materials
linked to ceremonial clothing : masks, dresses, hats : witnesses
of a cultural consciousness typical of long lasting phenomena.
Inside the museum you can also see modern accessories such as
zips, synthetic flowers, plastic mirrors and sneakers which have
substituted wooden or bone buttons, crepe paper flowers and the
typical clogs. But it does not mean giving up the tradition but
a necessary adaption to modern times : as every alive thing the
Carnival too has to evolve and adapt to the needs of modernity
drawing new life and vigor. |

Arrival in Alice Belcolle: panoramic
stop at the "Belvedere". Alice Belcolle is a village in the Province
of Alessandria situated on a 418m high hill. It is surrounded
by much lower hills so that you can enjoy a wonderful view at
360°: to North towards Mount Rosa ; to East towards the Po Valley
; to West towards the Monviso and to East towards the Ligurian
Pennines. After climbing a series of steps, immediately you realize
to be in one of the best panoramic point of Monferrato. On the
top a panel shows the farthest mountains. |
